Frequently asked questions

Most sessions are 1 hour. We’ll spend about 45 minutes working on training, a few minutes throughout for decompression breaks, and about 10 minutes at the end to go over final questions and/or homework.
-
Obedience courses include 6 sessions. For best results, space your sessions 1-2 weeks apart to allow time to practice your homework. This allows you and your dog to get familiar with the skills necessary to continue.

Since training often necessitates me driving long distances, travel charges allow me to cover the gas required to do so. Travel charges are $0.50 per mile (round trip). If you’d like to avoid travel charges, you may come to Harvest Hills Park in Saratoga Springs as the training location, which you can fill out on your intake form.

Travel charges may be paid in advance or in person via Square. You may use cash, debit or credit card, or Tap to Pay with contactless cards or digital wallets.

Pack walking is when a group of dogs is walked together at the same time. Dogs must be on leash, a few feet away from each other, and greetings are generally not allowed. Pack walks are great for any dog, but especially as a way to help nervous, fearful, reactive, or aggressive dogs engage in healthy socialization while having the safety net of a controlled environment. They’re also a great way to practice leash manners!

Puppies are all born with different personalities and character traits. Temperament testing is a way to determine those personalities and help match puppies with parents (and vice versa). Testing doesn’t necessarily reflect exactly how a puppy will grow up - a puppy’s environment and socialization until adulthood have a big impact. But temperament testing is a valuable tool that can be helpful in placing puppies in homes where they will thrive.

Every human and dog learns at their own pace. Skill testing is included at the end of every obedience package as a way to determine if you and your dog can perform all the skills you learned throughout the course reliably. If you can’t pass the skill test, you won’t be ready for the next level of obedience training. You can opt to continue practicing and schedule a retest at a later date. If you and your dog pass the retest and book the next level of obedience training within 30 days, the cost of your re-test session will go towards your package!

E-collars, also known as electronic collars, are an excellent tool for reinforcing behavior and ensuring your dog is reliable. This tool allows you to recall your off leash dog or give meaningful corrections from great distances, which helps teach your dog respect for the rules and keeps them safe even when they’re not by your side. Due to the nature of the Advanced and Elite Obedience course materials, an e-collar is required prior to being able to book.
-
Contrary to popular belief, high quality, proper electronic collars do not “shock” your dog. They use electrical stimulation exactly like that of the (FDA approved) TENS unit for humans. That said, always make sure to have a professional trainer teach you to ethically and safely use an e-collar. Just like any tool, it can be misused. Low quality e-collars often have issues with inconsistent stimulation output, don’t have scale that allows for the lowest stimulation level needed, are not waterproof, amongst other things. For that reason, I only work with a few specific models of high quality Dogtra e-collars.
